A Guide to Bluetooth Technology

We have all heard about the Bluetooth technology whenever we go to the market to buy a PDA, a laptop or even a cell phone. However, not many understand the exact usage and meaning of this latest technology. There are all sort of devices who are taking advantage of this wireless technology. Here is a brief review of this technology that can help you in understanding what it is:

Let us start with the name “Bluetooth”. The roots of this technology can easily be traced back to one of the Kings of Denmark that lived from 940 to 981. This King was mostly famous due to the help he provided people in communicating with each other. The name of this King is Harald Bluetooth. Thus this wireless communication technology is most appropriately named after the King.

The logo of Bluetooth technology is also interestingly designed since it represents the characters used in ancient Denmark. The logo is a combination of runic alphabetic from the time.

Features:

The FAQ section of Bluetooth.org describes the technology as a small form factor that provides people using mobile devices with a low cost radio solution. This technology is being used in mobile phones, computers, portable devices as well as for connecting to the internet.

Like other networking systems and cordless technology, the Bluetooth also have its own frequency to operate on. The technology uses 2.4 GHz radio signal to communicate wirelessly. With the passage of time and increase in demand for the technology this bad is getting very crowded and interference between the devices is also increasing. For this reason the telephones are now using 5.8 GHz band while other steps are also been taken to lessen the interference and other problems. A new version of the technology, version 1.1 is the latest development in the field. It has succeeded in interference level but a downside is that you will need a complete new set of hardware to use this new version since the hardware for version 1.0C is not compatible.

With a Bluetooth device you can transfer data at the rate of 723 kbps from a distance between 20-100 meters but this distance also depend on the device as well. The wireless network is not threatened by this speed of bluetooth since the wireless technology a much higher transfer at 802.11b/g wireless standards.

Practical Usage:

The Bluetooth technology has gained popularity at a rapid rate during the last few years. Now every device has the Bluetooth technology installed in it. Whether you are using a laptop, mobile phone or any other input/output device you will notice the Bluetooth technology at work.
Most of the laptops come with Bluetooth technology installed in it and you can easily connect it with other Bluetooth devices to share data. However, if your laptop or desktop does not come with Bluetooth then do not worry, all you need to do is buy a USB Bluetooth adapter.

You can wirelessly synchronize and transfer data using the Bluetooth in PDAs.

The Bluetooth technology is also very helpful in headphones since you can use it to listen to audio playback as well as a mobile communication device. With Bluetooth enabled handset you can go hands free and wire free wherever you want.

With the passage of time the Bluetooth has also been adopted by manufacturers such as Logitech. These companies are now producing mouse as well as keyboards to provide you with more freedom of movement. Using the Bluetooth enabled mouse and keyboard allows you with almost 30 feet range which is much better when compared with the6 feet of RF keyboard and mouse.

You can also eliminate the need of connecting printers to computers through wires thanks to Bluetooth technology. Wireless connectivity between any device and printer is a piece of cake even at long distances.

Conclusion

Although Bluetooth is not as popular as many proponents had wished but with the passage of time the goal is being slowly achieved. The Bluetooth devices might be a little expensive but due to the wireless connectivity ability of this technology it seems to be little price to pay.
