Before it was the regular 9xx-xxxx seven digit numbers for Edmonton, and the 2XX-XXXX numbers for Calgary. Then the there was a split right in the middle from East to West. Those North had a new area code 780, those south kept the original 403. Now, Albertans will be faced with 10 digit calling for all calls in one years' time.

Ten Digit Numbers Coming To Alberta September 12, 2008

The loss of available digits coupled with the rise in cell phone use has reduced the available numbers for calling. That means in just over a year residents in Alberta will have to use 10 digits to call within the province.

The new area code 587 will be afixed to many new numbers and cellular phone numbers. That means big changes for companies, fax machines, security systems, and other phone based applications that require phone digit access. Good news is, there's 14 months to find a solution.
