Smartphone Sales Worldwide, Apple Takes No.3 Spot

Apple Inc. created a big leap in the cellphone industry when it launched the iPhone. The iPhone is the much awaited gadget of the century and created a big buzz around the globe. For this year, smartphone sales in America alone skyrocketed to 50%. In a Global aspect, sales increased by almost 30%. As expected, Nokia, the biggest manufacturer of cell phone, ranked in first in the line of smartphone vendors followed with RIM, makers of Blackberry.

Even with the launch of the iPhone, Apple still remains at third place. Why iPhone didn't reach the top spot? True, the iPhone created a monstrous following being it is one of the first touch screen phones with multi-functions and be used cell phone, pocket PC and a media player, it doesn’t exactly conquered the world by the storm because it was not offered in most countries outside Europe and America in the first place.

Smartphone sales all over the world totaled to over 32 million during Q1 2008. Such figure is a 30% increase of the sales from last year. Apple shipped out over 1.72 million iPhone units, allowing the company to grab 5% of the market share. With Apple’s effort to distribute iPhone to Asia and other countries, it would surely pave way to the rise of its sales and it is not an impossibility that it would soon be the most popular smarthphone in the globe. Apple has made good sales in North America alone, grabbing the spot as the No.2 vendor of smartphones next to Nokia. It has managed to get hold of 20% of the market share for the current quarter.

U.S.’s economic state is not the best of its shape for this year. This is one of the reasons why many cell phone manufacturers opt to offer basic phones that are more affordable for the consumer. Even with the popularity of low end mobile phones, there is still a market that clamors for quality and functional smartphones even if buying one would mean that they have to shell out more money than they should. Makers of smartphones continue to lead a strong marketing and advertising campaign that enables consumers to appreciate smartphones all the more.

Apple may be way behind Nokia and RIM on the smartphone race. Nokia has about 40% of the market share while RIM secured 13.4%. With Apple's effort in distributing iPhone all over the globe and since it would be offering this much acclaimed gadget in 60 countries before this years ends, it would not be a surprise that they can catch ahead. iPhone's has phenomenal popularity that can help Apple grab the no.1 spot in the smartphone line-up.
