ATT 5-Year Deal for iPhone Exclusivity
There has been subdued interest for Apple's foray into the mobile phone industry. The iPhone looks nice, but it's not cheap, so many insiders have wondered what the real success of the offering will be.
GSM Only - No CDMA Version of iPhone
AT&T has a deal with Apple that gives the company the exclusive distribution rights to the handset for the next five years. That means for America, the only iPhone available will be a GSM model. Verizon and Sprint customers will be out of luck, no CDMA version will be available.
Apple is prohibited from developing a version of the iPhone that can work on CDMA wireless networks. 5 Years seems like a long time, and it is, in reality, iPhone will never be offered in a CDMA version because in five years a new version will emerge, hopefully a CDMA. That may be good news for those wishing to unlock the iPhone to use on other GSM networks, but bad bad news for CDMA subscribes.
