Nokia and AT&T Introduce Flip Cellphone with Symbian
On November 13, AT&T and Nokia launched the Nokia 6650 in time for the holiday shoppers. The flip phone runs the Symbian S60 Operating System, which expands the device’s capabilities through third-party applications, themes, etc.
The Nokia 6650 is a stylish gadget available in red and silver colors, with best-selling smartphone features such as a two-megapixel camera, a 2.2” screen, an external 1.36” screen, external audio playback buttons, a dedicated key for launching AT&T Navigator, and complete AT&T multimedia services. Its Symbian Operating System is the key to the Nokia 6650’s multimedia prowess. The open-source S60 platform in the 6650 offers many developer languages, hence the creation of the vast variety of entertainment and productivity applications available today.
According to Jupitermedia Vice President of mobile strategy Michael Gartenberg, the Nokia 6650 will be a success due to it being a smartphone in a flip-phone form factor. While it does need marketing leverage to be able to compete against other mobile choices such as Apple’s iPhone and the BlackBerry Storm, the Nokia 6650 is priced at $69.99 with a two-year service agreement, giving it a bit of a price advantage. Nokia designed such a device to cater to the growing cell phone users who wanted easy navigation to their favorite mobile applications like multimedia and entertainment. With this new handset, it combines style, functionality and affordability in one package. According to AT&T, this release yet again signals its commitment to customer choice, and strengthens its reputation of offering the best of mobile phones.
