Canonical announced details on the Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded Edition. Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded Edition will provide a rich Internet experience for users of Intel’s 2008 Mobile Internet Device (MID) platform. To achieve this, Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded will run video, sound and offer browsing experiences to the MID target user. Optimized for MIDs based on Intel's low power processors and chipsets, Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded edition is expected to deliver fast boot and resume times, and reside in a small memory and disk footprint.

The first full release of the software will be available in October 2007 corresponding with the normal release cycle of the Ubuntu operating system. Working collaboratively with Intel, Canonical is working to deliver software on actual devices from system manufacturers in 2008.

Namco announced plans to bring the classic arcade hit Popeye to mobile phones through a partnership with King Features, the world's premier distributor of comics, columns, editorial cartoons, puzzles and games to newspapers, and one of the world’s most experienced organizations in merchandising and entertainment licensing.



The game lets players be Popeye on his quest to win back his sweetie while overcoming the antics of his rival Bluto. Collect the hearts, musical notes and cries of “H-E-L-P” that a captured Olive tosses down, while avoiding the Sea Hag’s bouncing skulls, Bluto’s punches and other dangers. True to the series, Popeye is “strong to the finich” if he gets his spinach, temporarily gaining the strength to go after Bluto and knock him off the screen.

Unlike other versions of the game, the mobile edition will include bonus features, like networked components and an enhanced mode with additional game play, and cameos by other characters from the Popeye series.

Popeye’s North American mobile game debut is scheduled for fall 2007.

Daylight Saving Time in the US and some Canadian provinces will change starting in 2007. These changes could cause clocks and Microsoft Outlook calendar appointments on Windows Mobile devices to display incorrect times for March 11 – April 1, 2007 and October 28 – November 4, 2007 and again in subsequent years. You can prevent these problems by installing three Microsoft files on your device and/or PC:

* Daylight Saving Time 2007 Update Tool
* Outlook Time Zone Update Tool

Upcoming Windows Mobile 6.0 phones to hit the market will include Opera Software ASA's mobile browser and Microsoft's browser. Motorola Q as well as phones from HTC, Asus and Toshiba, will include Opera Mobile. Microsoft launched Windows Mobile 6.0, the latest version of its mobile phone operating system, this week. Internet Explorer Mobile, Microsoft's browser, comes with the software. A number of handset makers announced this week plans to release phones running the Microsoft operating system.



Opera's browser technology renders Web sites to fit inside the area of a mobile phone screen. The browser is also designed to display sites faster than competitors.

Tegic Communications has announced that the XT9 predictive text system, as seen on Windows Mobile devices, will be available on mass-market handsets with standard 12-key mobile phone keypads. The Tegic T9 predictive system is found on many handsets on the market today, and XT9 brings great enhancements to an already handy interface.



The two features that will most appeal to end users are the word prediction list and integrated spelling correction. Word prediction has long been seen on Windows Mobile devices, as well as in the iTap system used on Motorola handsets, and works by predicting the next word in a sentence based on the word just entered. Possibly even more helpful is the spelling correction feature, which will compensate for users tapping incorrect keys or missing keys.
