Cellphone Records: Who are reading them?

Just how secure are your cellphone records? And who are reading them? It was recently in the news that even the Barack Obama’s cell phone records was retrieved and read by employees of his wireless service provider- Verizon Wireless. The company is yet to comment on this issue but a lot of people are now wondering how safe are their personal information and cell phone records in the hands of other people?

It was found that Verizon Wireless employees viewed some personal information of Obama’s cellphone record after his service was discontinued for months. The company investigated this matter and employees who accessed the Obama account was put to paid leave. The employees who were found to access Obama’s cellphone records without authorization were eventually fired.

The management of Verizon Wireless still remained silent on this issue. Cell phone information can in fact be read and accessed by service provider employees. Your cell phone records- such as the people you called, people who called you and the duration of your phone call can be retrieved. Even your text messages and voicemail calls can also be read and accessed.

Current accounts that can readily be viewed by telcom employees but closed accounts, like Obama’s, can be trickier to access. It is a reality that snooping of cell phone records is in existence and service providers’ employees can look into it at anytime and use it for whatever ill purpose. But the scarier part is that there is no real protection that is given to millions of subscribers of wireless services.
