Cellphones and iPods and The Safety of Pedestrians
It is almost a part of our everyday life to listen to music and talk to on phone, for whatever reason, may it be important or not, the problem is where we are getting used to it while we are walking. Ranging from a businessman who’s trying to squeeze in little work through his cell phone wile on his way to pick up his lunch or a young girl listening to her favorite song on her new iPod while taking the path home, even you and I are not excluded from the habit. It seems like a normal thing to do day in and day out.
It’s relatively alarming that some accidents happen because of this. Cell phones are controversial for causing driving-related accidents because some people just can’t resist the urge to talk on their cell phone while driving. But pedestrians themselves are capable of obliviously putting their safety in danger by having engrossed conversation on their cell phone while they walk.
Portable gadgets and devices such as iPods, cell phones, CD players and walkmans can pose a potential safety risk for pedestrians. These portable gadgets and devices are huge distractions on the road, street and parking lots, whether you’re the one who’s doing the walking or the driving. With situations where pedestrians and drivers are so much engaged in their cell phone conversation or reading their text messages or they are too much absorbed with the music they are listening to that they don’t know what’s going on around them any longer: like temporarily forgetting their current situation. The focus where it should be on the street is somewhere else among other things.
The major contributing factor to this distraction is that the people’s ears are listening to other things when it’s supposed to be listening on what’s going on around them. One of the safety senses especially when on the road, critically stripped away by portable listening gadgets and devices that could carelessly and easily cost someone their life.
To make your walking trips a bit much safer, here are some quick reminders:
Pay attention! Simple but important, paying attention on what is going on around you will keep you alert to any kind of situation or event that may take place on the streets. You are already distracted as it is for the street itself offers a lot of distractions alone so it is better to minimize and remove all distractions that may obstruct your safety senses.
Always be aware for drivers who are not paying attention themselves. Look both ways before crossing the street and always cross in crosswalks or pedestrian lanes only. Be always in alert mode for moving cars, beck-up lights and engine noise when you’re in parking lots. Being extra cautious at all times especially at nights will keep you away from any potential danger. Always carry identification and up-to-date contact information for emergencies when leaving the house.
Following simple safety rules, limiting your distractions and paying more attention when you’re on the street will ensure your safety everyday. With over 5900 fatalities by car accidents every year and thousands of people who gets injured on these accidents, a little attention on our part can surely make a big difference. Always be safe and alert.
