Mobile Telecom Giants Locked in Battle with LCC for White Spaces
Couch potatoes may soon find more reason to stay glued in front of their TV sets – but hold off ordering that pizza yet. The latest news between Sprint Nextel Corporation, T-Mobile USA and the Federal Communications Commission or FCC is locked in a two on one battle of wills with regard to vacant TV channels – otherwise known as white spaces. The two carriers are urging FCC to allocate white spaced for more wireless back haul services on a fixed-license basis. If approved, this will open up a whole new back and forth discussion between those who want more opportunities for WiFi enhancements and TV networks that are in fear of having such digital transmissions cause interference to their regular programming.
Then again, the computation for such back haul services might cause wireless carriers to shell out a pretty penny, thus imposing exorbitant fees for their service. It is then Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile's task to find more affordable means of improving the need to communicate and touch information via WiFi. The demands for white spaces for such a purpose are indirectly proportional to the amount of spaces available, as we have seen in the number of years that the number of occupied channels on our local programming has tripled, at the very least.
The two telecommunications giants have turned to Fiber Tower Corporation and Rural Telecommunications group Inc. for support in their FCC filing. Before such a plea for support was made, the mobile-phone industry has safely remained on the sidelines and away from the line of cross-crossing fire, slowly but surely developing other means to make do with opportunities for WiFi devices that might also work properly with vacant channels. While they have not yet claimed 100% success, they are testing the waters by announcing to the public that it is only a very short matter of time before they do. On the other hand, TV networks are quick to protest that such implementation would do damage to their programming, as the digital television signals will definitely be affected by white space interference. While Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless parent companies have gained a foothold in the special access market that both Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile are profusely against.
