NeckarCom’s Latest Commercial VoIP Offering Supported by Motorola’s WiMAX Technology
Serving integrated voice and data service over WiMAX 802.16e, the first in Germany
The German market leader in the telecommunications industry, NeckarCom Telekommunikation GmbH continues its partnership with world-renowned telecommunications giant Motorola, Inc. December 2007 marks NeckarCom’s launch of its commercial service in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) in the Ulm region, which constitutes part of Germany’s third largest state of Baden-Württemberg. This is not the first taste of innovation from the Motorola-NeckarCom tie up.
In the earlier part of the year, Motorola was chosen to for the delivery and installation of a 3.5GHz WiMAX network. The WiMAX technology brought in wireless broadband service and was well-received by Ulm’s residential and business districts. This enabled NeckarCom to tap a wider market base and cover underserved areas that could not be reached by fixed-line broadband. With Motorola’s WiMAX system in place, NeckarCom has now incorporated standard voice and data services, providing additional added-value solutions to the Ulm region.
NeckarCom’s new commercial VoIP service brings over better, more efficient communication methods riding over WiMAX waves. Quality is exceptional and costs are low – and it is the end user that benefits from this improved service. Furthermore, it is expected that other providers similar to NeckarCom will now be forced to improve their own products and services in order to stay competitive, benefiting consumers ever more. NeckarCom’s new VoIP service is the first in Germany to take advantage of the WiMAX 802.16e technology. With WiMAX 802.16e, customers will be looking at the future of wireless efficiency that benefits not only the mobile market but fixed-line infrastructure as well, lessening dependency of phone companies that dictate what price a customer will pay for the speed of broadband service.
Motorola, Inc. is pleased with outcome of this large-scale project. The WiMAX network has changed the way broadband is delivered and used. It offers much more flexibility over wired broadband offerings such as cable and DSL, thereby enabling more users from the rural areas connection to modern technology. Clearly, Motorola once again marks their leadership status in the industry. NeckarCom and Motorola’s innovative partnership does not end here. Further expansion plans are underway to deliver bigger and better services. In the meantime, the Ulm region has more than enough technology to happily contend with.

The next addition is not far away. It will combine both internet and mobile devices. This is by use of WiMAX, technologies of which are being launched by Sprint (XOHM), KT( WiBro) etc. By bringing in high speed internet access to mobile devices, not necessarily PCs or PDAs, but also music players and gaming devices, it is going o make mobile devices more akin to a personal internet. When you add in the features they bring with it- location based searches, location based video clippings and so on, you may have a totally new dimension to the mobile devices.
XOHM will be an important event as it will be the first “big-bang” launch of WiMAX, one of the kind which gave birth to our universe. So far WiMAX has been afflicted by the Volumes syndrome. Low usage, low volumes and high prices of CPEs keeping mass less interested. XOHM represents the first countrywide launch of mobile WIMAX with the target of all mobile devices. This is sure to break the vicious volumes cycle for WiMAX and lead to growth worldwide.
