A new device has arrived from Palm called the Foleo. The device is an ultra mobile PC that sits between a PDA smartphone/pocket PC and a laptop. Basically, think of a miniature version of a laptop with a full sized keyboard but few running applications.

Foleo features a larger screen than a PDA and full size keyboard to view and edit email and office documents.

The device is paired with a host smartphone and stays synchronized. A list of supported phones is not yet available.

Because of its limited features speed is not an issue due to limited program. Fast navigation, a compact and elegant design, and a battery that lasts up to five hours of use. (Not that great of an upgrade to a super laptop.)

Big plus for some, Foleo is built on an open Linux-based platform.

U.S. availability for Foleo begins this summer with pricing expected to be $499 after an introductory $100 rebate.

The device has no built-in network connectivity, but relies on its host smartphone. Want to surf the web? Do it through your smartphone. So basically you're adding a device to an already crowded pocket.

Palm has partnered with DataViz and Opera Software, demonstrating ease with which applications can be ported to the Palm Foleo.

Foleo initially focuses on email, but Palm expects additional features and capabilities as the platform grows.

If it grows, I ask again, why not just a regular laptop? Could it be the price? Or is this just yet another gadget for the overburdened technology worker of today? Or is it so inexpensive that you'll want to get one for every room? Time will tell.
