Porting Landline Numbers Coming Soon?
Two US Senate lawmakers have introduced legislation that would set minimum performance standards for transferring phone numbers from one service provider to another. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) is cosponsoring the bill. The move seeks to create the means where the FCC can extend existing wireless number portability to include landlines.
The wireline telephone sector complained the Stevens-Inouye bill is overly burdensome on landline carriers. CTIA said the current system stifles competition. Wireless-to-wireless porting typically takes only hours while the wireline-to-wireless process can take days, in part because landline carriers require more data to transfer a subscriber’s telephone number to a mobile phone operator.
Guttman-McCabe want the FCC to intervene, given the inability of the North American Numbering Council and the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions to arrive at a consensus on porting validation issues during the past three years.
