Playing games through your Wi-Fi network with players from around the globe? Well why not talk with them too? SCEE and BT have signed a deal that will transform the PSP into a wireless broadband device that can function as a handheld. With over 8 million PSPs shipped across Europe and 24 million globally, there are bound to be many takers for the new product.




The four year deal will enable PSP users to make video calls, voice calls and send messages over the internet from home via BT wireless hotspots. The service will utilize the upcoming PSP camera and microphone and will initially be promoted across the UK and then Europe. No word on possible US launch support. Once the system gets rolled out in the UK, British Telecom plans on licensing the software to other telecom companies in 100 other countries.

BT will be SCEE's lead wireless communications partner across SCEE territories (102 territories across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania). BT has developed the ability to provide video and voice calls over the internet as part of its 21CN project. This partnership intends to integrate PSP with the BT Broadband video and voice ‘softphone’ products already available.
