Steps to Recover Wet Cell Phone

You've been looking to make a call and can't seem to find your phone. Uh oh, did I leave my phone in the washer? For many of us, submerging our cell phones in water is a sad reality. Barring dropping your cellular in the middle of the lake, here are some practical steps to try to recover your hardware. Most of the time your phone will short out when submerged, but that doesn't mean all is lost. Electronics generally will function again after drying out entirely.

Edit: We've had a lot of people ask them same questions and make the same errors. DO NOT TURN ON YOUR PHONE PREMATURELY, BE PATIENT. 1-2 DAYS MINIMUM SELF DRYING TIME. Your phone will thank us :D

How to Save Your Water Logged Cell Phone

1. You've discovered/realized your cell phone has been submerged in water. Regardless of how long it was underneath you should follow the same procedure. Firstly, remove the phone and try to get all excess water off with a cloth.
Wet phone
2. Immediately remove all removable parts including: phone battery, SIM card, and any other easily removable parts. Do not go to great lengths to remove covers or circuit boards that were never meant for your removal.

3. At this point you may wish re-submerge the phone in distilled water. Chances are you don't have the stuff lying around the house. Any drugstore should carry distilled water. Distilled means free of items that may conduct electricity. Why is this important? From your recently submerged foray, you cell phone or PDA may have picked up the laundry detergent, dirt, etc. It is important to get those items out, however, this step is usually skipped by most.

Simply re-submerge the phone entirely in distilled water. If you have a light spray bottle (that the distilled water was purchased in) you can gently soak the phone. This also will help prevent rust on those hard to dry nooks and crannies.

4. If you really want to go to extreme with removing all traces of water then use an electronics cleaner, or if you're in a pinch, WD-40. (Your phone will smell like the lubricant though.) The silicone/WD-40 will drive water out of the phone. If you're really ambitious submerge the entire phone in WD-40 or silicone electronics cleaner in a bowl. You can also opt for rubbing alcohol in place of distilled water. It dries faster, hopefully it doesn't harm components though.

5. Let the phone dry on its own. DO NOT apply direct heat like a hair dryer or heater. The best option is to leave it out in a well ventilated area somewhere in the sunlight. Direct sunlight may not be the best option. A light powered light bulb (less than 60W) is also an option if sunlight is hard to come by.

6. Leave the phone for a minimum of 24 hours (even up to three days) or until all items appear dry. You only have one shot to restart the phone so it better be completely dry or all bets are off. Patience is a virtue in this case. Because you generally can't open the phone from all of its components there may be water logged in some cranny. You don't want rust, among other problems, to develop in the unit so work hard to remove all moisture.

7. All power contact that you have access to, battery and SIM, offer a quick clean (with your distilled water of course if you haven't done number 3.

8. Re-assemble phone placing battery in last, power on, watch the screen come to life! Generally when you submerge the phone the first thing to go is the LCD screen. Generally though, the rest of the body and hardware functions. Sometimes you're lucky and the screen remains as well.

Taking these steps, particularly numbers 2 and 6 at the minimum, will ensure the greatest probability of recovering some functionality for your waterlogged phone. If you have any other tips please feel free to share.

  1. zev goldman Says:

After you have used the distilled water I suggest that you spray the phone out with low pressure. Canned air will work well. Use the air several time over the course of the drying process. It will simply force moisutre out of the phone quicker than a passive drying.

  2. Jeremiah Lindsay Says:

You might also put your phone in a container of minute rice. The rice will absorb a lot of the excess moisture.

  3. Zaynab Says:

    Hi,
My phone fell in water for about 10 seconds. I took the battery and sim out. Unfortunately, I applied heat via a hair dryer. I also left it out to dry. This was a couple of weeks ago. When I open the phone (as it is a flip phone), the screen goes white. I take it that means the screen is slowly going. I've stopped using the phone for the time being. Is there anything I can do? Would following the above steps change anything? Or would it be best to change the LCD screen?

  4. news Says:

RICE? Are you serious! haha.... so seriously, are you serious?

Regarding the LCD screen. Generally more often than not the first thing to go regardless of what you do is the LCD screen. If you can change LCD screen then go for it. If it's not dry after a few weeks (and after the above steps) then it's probably the end.

  5. Mark Says:

i have an env phone....and i jumped in the pool with it....
asap i got the phone and put it in the sun to dry..then i went home got the blow dryer to try to dry it faster..opps
so its been a day and the phone turns on but only when the charger is connected to it........
does that mean i need a new battery or a new phone.....

  6. news Says:

Patience is key! If you can make calls plugged in try a new battery at the store and see if it works before buying.

  7. kaitlyn Says:

i lost my phone in the river on the 4th and left it there and last night we went back to find it.. luckly we did. at 1st i put it in the freezer and thats suspossed to work.... until i read an article that said put it where heat can get to it.. so i did and im still waitin on it. i tried turning it on last night and it vibrated and only 3 lights were workin. so i really hope this works. oh yeah my battery says (when i plug it up on my old phone) "invalid battery" i have no clue what that means!
well i sure hope this works!!
    :]]

  8. news Says:

The FREEZER?! Too bad you didn't read the directions above, that' sthe best way to recover your phone. Lights and batteries tend to be the first to go.

  9. Philip Elliott Says:

Okay, help. You know you're tired when you look in the washing machine & you see your cell phone at the bottom of it. I took out the battery & air dried as best I can. When I put the battery back in, I can hear & feel the vibrator working, so that is at least a good sign. My cell phone is for pure emergencies & pay as you go. It's an older, but very good Motorola V300 & even though I live in Toronto, was able to use it in Angola N.Y. on the way down to Ohio back in May. What are the chances of my phone coming back to life & does anyone have a Motorola V300 they want to get rid of?? I promise I won't wash it!!!

  10. puffer Says:

JUMPED IN THE POOL WITH MY PHONE. I PUT IT IN THE DRYER THAN PUT IT IN RICE AND THE SCREEN STILL TURNS WHITE WHAT SHOULD I DO

  11. news Says:

    PATIENCE IS THE KEY FOLKS!!!!

Don't put it under extreme heat, I think the dryer may be too much. patience! Meaning let it air dry for at minimum 24 hours. Screens are the first to go and the most likely to never recover (and when they go that's the end.)

Philip: The fact it still works implies your SIM card is fine. When you really need a new phone just buy an unlocked one off of ebay or new somewhere (We have coupons for puremobile.com if you want.... use 'DiscussWireless' in checkout).

  12. Claire Says:

i dropped my phone in soggy mud at a music festival and although i got the majority of mud off, it remained slightly damp for the weekend because i had no means to dry it. it would turn on and the sreeen worked fine but it would only stay on for about a minute. i now have the sim and battery off and although i've come to the conclusion the battery is probably a goner, i was wondering what i can do for the screen because it's foggy with condensation?? i left it out to dry overnight but now i've put it in a plastic bag with silica gel packs to try and absorb the excess moisture- good or bad idea??

  13. news Says:

Not a bad idea. You could try rice as well. Turning it on while it's still damp is probably the worst thing to do. Try draining the battery completely next time you turn it on and then charge it all the way back.

  14. Philip Elliott Says:

So far it looks like my Motorola V300 is not coming back to life. As I'm on a budget, very tight budget, are there any suggestions as to where to get a V300 replacement cheap?? Thankfully I only paid about $30(CAD) for it and really do like the phone?? Help???

  15. news Says:

    Philip:

I'm guessing your best bet is ebay now. Maybe just a new battery is needed for your existing phone? Worth a shot, go into a store and see if they won't test it for you.

  16. Ben Kukkee Says:

I was on my twentieth lap in an olympic style swimming pool when I reached down to feel my motorola cell phone girgling in my pocket. I almost yelled "Noooo!" under water, but instead I calmly finished my length. I unfolded the phone to dry. There was water in the main display as well as the time display. There was enough water in my phone to provide a goldfish with a new home. I thought it was doomed, but maintained a faint hope that maybe I could save it. I didn't take out the battery or SIM card until I got home. All of the water dots were red. At first I dried both the battery and the phone in the sun for a day. Steam collected in both displays, but the water level appeared to go down. Then, I decided to dry my phone for three more days ontop of my computer monitor. The steam was fierce. If I was inside the display, I surely coud have written my name in it. Every once in a while I would flip my phone over, so the water would have a chance to shift. I changed angles every so often, making sure the water could drain in every way possible. Then the moment of truth came. I put the battery in and turned it on, but there was no life to be seen. I thought that maybe the battery just needed to be charged, so I plugged it in and to my happy ears it made a chirp. I charged it for two days hoping to dry it out more. The battery never recovered, but I bought a new battery for the phone and it works beautifully, except, the time on the display isn't right anymore. From this day forward I tell people that they can save their water logged phone, all you need is a little patience and a dry, radiant computer monitor. Best of luck to all of you!

  17. Jaime Says:

Okay, here's my deal. I went swimming with some kids I babysat... they thought it'd be funny to watch my cell sink to the bottom. Anyway, after i found it.. I pulled it apart and let it all dry in the sun. However it took 2 days to turn on. Everything worked good, for five minutes. My screen went black but my speakers are working fine. Help me?
    Signed,
    A sorry teen.

  18. Ben Kukkee Says:

Give it a few more days. Dry it super on your computer monitor and flip it every once in a while. There is a chance that the battery is dead and the phone is fine. Before you give up on the phone, try a new battery first.

  19. news Says:

Thanks for your story of success Ben! We're going to repost this article in an updated fashion soon. Included will be an example of how to recover your phone after it's been in the fridge! You'd be surprised how much water is MORE of a problem.

  20. andy Says:

pleeaasee heellpp me today its so embarrassing i droped my cellphone in the toilett haha but the point is i got it out and i immedeatly turnesd it on and ive tried lots of time to turn it on and the i took out the battery and sim card and i driedd it with a hair dryer and now its just turns white wat shouldd i doo ??? heeeelppp pleasee

  21. news Says:

If you turned it on while wet you may have destroyed all chance of saving the phone. It should have been dried out completed before ever being turned on. Give it a couple days to dry, try to plug it in and turn it on. if the battery is dead then try a new one... If that doesn't work get a new phone :(

  22. iqra Says:

i left my 6230i phone in my pocket and went kanoeing. i fell upside down in the water and forgot about my phone. when i came out of the water i was soaked and i took out my phone. i dryed it and then left it there. after a while i turned it on and the screen was blank and it was vibrating. i came home and dryed it with a hair dryer. i left it to dry again for about 3 hours. i put it on and it still never worked.then i put another battery in and the phone still vibrated. i love this phone very much!! could you tell me how to make it work in less than 2 days please!!!

  23. kelsey Says:

yesterday i dropped my phone in the pool, i don't know how long it was there saw the towel that i had it wrapped in had fallen in. i immediatly set it out in the sun and took the battery out. after that i put it in my freezer for about 2 hours. then plugged it in my charger and it still didn't work. i left it in my freezer all night, because i have dropped my phone in water before and when i put it in the freezer it worked again, but this morning it turned on and it was just a white screen for about 5 seconds. i put my battery in my moms phone and it worked fine. does that just mean it's the screen? i have tried blow drying it and sitting it straight up to let the water dry. what should i do, what has worked for everyone? do i need to just get a new phone or keep trying!??

  24. news Says:

Why on earth did you put it in the freezer? You need to leave it in the sun for a couple of days. Get all the water out, try again. Maybe you shot the screen.... BTW, when you take it out of the freezer it will get wet again with condensation.

  25. Phillip Says:

I dropped my Blackberry in the lake. It was submerged for atleast 30 seconds.

I did everything wrong; didn't take the battery out immediately, used a blow drier, turned it on repeatedly, and finally stuck it in a freezer. My nephew said he'd dropped his phone in water and someone at the phone store told him to put it in the freezer.

I do not know how it works, but upon removal from the freezer the screen was fine, the interior moisture had vanished and the rest of the unit operated also. The only item that no longer functions is the space key while writing emails... Go figure.

  26. Clarence Windem Says:

was walking to a swimming hole and my phone was in my pocket and submerged for about 10 seconds or so . I took it out and let it dry for an hour or so before opening the screen. When i did, the mp3 player was playing music and the screen was still working minus a little bit of condensation. I turned the phone off and took the battery off and its still drying. I plan to leave it off for a day or two. Do you think my phone will still be functionable?

  27. news Says:

Let it dry for a couple of days, I fully expect it to work.

  28. Shawna Says:

My brother has this old cell phone that he got quite a while ago, and he washed it a long time ago. I'm not sure what he did to save it, but I decided that I want to take a shot at it. Well first i let it sit in my window, and then i tried a hair drier, then i put it in front of a fan (i did all of that after taking the batery out), then i read your site. Seeing as I can't get distilled water (I'm only 13) I decided to just leave it in my window do you think that is good enough? What else could I do? HELP!!

  29. Lydia Says:

I dropped my phone in a glass of water a few days ago... :( ..and I pretty much did everything wrong. I used a blow dryer and turned on the phone. For a while the screen was white, then the phone went dead completely. So I charged it for a while and it worked! :) Although about half the keys didnt work, I could still use it to call people and stuff. But when I woke up today, the screen was totally black but the phone was still on.. i just couldn't see anything. :( So should I get a new battery? Or get a new phone altogether? I JUST got this phone a few months ago so I hope I can save it! It's a Motorolla PEBL.

    Any advice?!
    thanks

  30. news Says:

Shawna: Not sure distilled water will help, but you can get it at any grocery story.

Lydia: New battery won't help your screen, that's usually the first to go. Try making sure it's completely dry and then see what it does when plugged in. If there are functions different from plugin and battery a new battery may be in order.

  31. rose Says:

A wave drenched my beach bag with my phone in it. I immediately took out the battery and laid the phone out to dry in the sun. I also used a blow dryer on low heat and continued to let the phone dry naturally. I left it on the monitor all night -- today i plugged it in and it went on beautifully and then it looked like it was going to start flickering (after about 6 seconds) so i immediatley turned it off. Does this mean it is not completely dry and there is hope?

  32. news Says:

Sounds to me there is hope. Be sure to let it dry as much as possible by taking out all the pieces you can. A new battery may be in order.

  33. gills Says:

Is it true that the battery packs in cell phones now have something that changes color to show when they fall in water?

  34. Ju Says:

I did something very silly - I made a call from my bathroom when I was in a hurry and trying to save time... but it was steamy, and my hand was wet...I know, I know!!! Anyway an hour later - on another call, the phone died. The other person couldnt hear me, although I could hear them, then it eventually died. The screen still works, when it is plugged in. Not plugged in - nothing, dead. Is there any hope? I didnt realise at first it was water related so I left it charging overnight thinking the battery had died, then tried to turn on in the morning - nothing...
Please give me some good news!

  35. Ju Says:

p.s. even when plugged in it will not switch on or react to the buttons, just get the charging symbol. It is a samsung D600

  36. Madigan Says:

Well I just returned from a day of fishing and I unfortunately got me and my cell phone wet. We got stuck in a storm and in the panic we had to beach the boat which involved some moments in waist high water. The problem was that my phone was in my rear pocket.

Not having this website quickly accessable at the lake I did what probably anyone would do the second they realized their Motorola Krazer cell phone may not work anymore, I tried to turn it on! I could see some symbols on the screen and it vibrated. I did eventually take the battery off it but after reading this site I feel like numpty.

I am hoping after a couple of days it will work again. I dont think it got fully submerged so I think there may still be hopel.

  37. news Says:

As with everything, take out all the pieces you can safely and let it dry for a couple of days and try again! Rarely are phones completely lost when water hits them.

  38. Hope Says:

I have a motorola slvr L6 and I knocked over a glass water on my nightstand, not directly on the phone, but some water may have splashed on it and it got wet underneath. I took the battery out immediately and dried it as much as I can, but out of curiosity, several minutes later, I put the battery back in and turned it on and it turned on with the screen, but then the screen went blank. The phone still worked because I tried to call. I took out the batteries and the sim card and set the phone under a warm lamp. Could the screen still be saved if I let it dry for a couple days and not touch it? Is there anything I can do? help!

  39. larua Says:

i put my phone in the wash and i let it dry for a week or two on the side in my front room and i turn it on and it WORKS :) but the only problem is there water bubble kind of in screen how do i get rid of it i have followed any steps above because phone works just the bubble

    thanks for any reply

  40. news Says:

Hope, just dry it some more or try another battery. You can always do some more advanced things but frankly it's not for the regular user to try them.

Laura: If you can get closer to the screen by taking off the back and put it in direct sunlight for another day.

  41. larua Says:

there all marks in screen looks like washing powder how do i get it out ?

  42. danny c Says:

so last night... kinda had a bad night.

lets just say i found out the phrase "beer before liquor, never sicker..." is actually true.

puked my guts out in my toilet. whaddayaknow some girl calls me and as i answer phone plops right in. not really knowing whats goin on i just reached right in the puke and grabbed it.. took it apart and let it dry all night. this morning i read some stuff on the internet and took some silica packets and put them in a closed zip lock baggy with my phone and the battery. not sure if the silica made it work or just the time to dry.. tried it and it works!

umm but the only thing i noticed is some condensed water in the camera screen.. wondering if time will fix that too??

    peace

  43. Marco M Says:

thank you for your directions... but how about sea salted water?? motorola v3, after ten days tryed to charge and the noise was like frying... tryed to turn it on and just made a blimp... then dismantle the phone that is an ugly view... now I'll try with the distilled water etc... if you have any other suggestion thank you in adv.
    Marco from Como Italy

  44. news Says:

Definately the distilled water Marco, salt water should be taken out immediately.

Danny, you gotta let it dry out hardcore and the condensed water will disappear.

Laura: You too can try distilled water, submerge the whole phone and let it dry for minimum two days.

  45. Mel Says:

I've got an LG Verizon phone, the sticker under the battery shows the phone got wet but I can't recall how! It's never taken a swim in anything other than hot and humid summer air! The phone itself works intermittently but ultimately ends up saying "Car Kit" on the screen. Still takes pictures, downloaded rings still work, screen is fine and navigating around on it is no problem. I can make and receive calls but can't hear a thing nor can I get it to hook up to my bluetooth ear piece. Verizon tells me I have to get a new phone but I'm holding out hope it will still work.

Will leaving it uncovered in front of the air conditioning vent still work or are all bets off since I've tried to use it now and then? I see that patience is the key but I didn't know about patience until tonight, 5 days after the fact. The phone has seemed to "recover" each day, meaning every day is seems to work a little better than the day before. Your help is much appreciated!

  46. twun Says:

I dropped my phone in the lake and it sank to the bottom (about 4 feet). I've air dried it for a day, and dried it with canned air. I can turn it on, it vibrates, and the LCD screen works when i first turn it on, but after that it's hopeless. None of the buttons work after I turn it on. Should I dry it longer before turning it on again?

  47. news Says:

Twun: Try drying it out naturally in the sun. If no buttons work then it's probably toast.

Mel: Let it dry completely, be patient :P. Also, use natural sunlight and not the A/C. Hope it works out.

  48. sherrie Says:

So first off i got my phone dirty and i tried to clean it with lysol and after it wouldnt turn on so i let it sit for a day then everything worked but the screens and then i tried rinsing it with water and then dried it for a couple hours and then everything worked for a second and then noting worked so i dried it for another three days and everything works but the screens are just white ....what do i do! help

  49. Joy Says:

I accidentally dropped my phone in the toilet! I took it out ASAP and took out the battery. I dried it with a towel. I didn't know what to do so after I dried the battery and phone, I put the battery back in and tried to turn it on, but it made a weird sound. So I took out the battery and put it on again and tried to turn it on! Was that a mistake? So after I freaked out, I went online and searched how to repair a cell phone if wet. I found this site. I was hoping if you could help me. I think I made a mistake to try and turn my cell phone on! Please help me!

  50. Joy Says:

My cell phone was submerged about less than 10 seconds! Do you think I can save if?

  51. news Says:

Sherrie: Let it DRY! And don't use solvents like lysol.

Joy: LET IT DRY! If you let it dry (since it was only wet for 10 seconds) you'll probably recover all functions.

The only key that works is the red one, the one that we used to end calls or turn off the cellphone. Do you have any advice that could make my key pad to work. My mom dropped her samsung sync phone in the ocean on accident. We were just walking along the edge getting our feet wet when a little girl fell and the wave pushed her into my mom and made her fall. She kept the battery in for awhile not knowing to take it out and it kept buzzing. A bit later like 10-15mins, I took out the battery and sim and dried it. I read the salt water would corrode it so I dipped it in 91% alcohol it was the best I could find. Now theres a big water bubble in the screen and still after 1 day. Should I wait til it dries or should I some how take the screen apart and dry it out? It doesn't seem as though it will come out??

hah... I got you all BEAT!!! so I own a boat and was in harborfest (big party) my drunk butt drops my phone in the lake... there it sat in about fifteen feet of water for 3 full days... my curagous friend (also drunk) decides it is now a mission to retrieve the phone. he get it. meanwhile I have already reported it to insurance and figured well hey maybe I can get the mem stick out of it (worked immediately) and the battery 2 days. there the phone sat in my dresser for like a month and I had my repplacement. so then my replacements camera starts acting funny... so I said hey throw the battery in the lake phone. WOW fired right up no problem whatsoever! now I have an extra phone but I think the SIM is blocked. one caveat... memory card function doesn't work anymore. boo hoo. it's the new lg vx8700 the aluminum. These phones certainly are diehard. After all this thing literally swam with the fishes in lake ontario for three full days! haha

i swam with my phone in my pocket
when i got home i put the battery and the phone in a bowl of rice
and then after a day i took it out and had to blow out some tiny grains of rice with some canned air

everything appears fine, i can turn it on, the screens work (although there's water in my lcd screen) and my phone shows that i have text messages and missed calls and all that

only problem is that the red button is the only button that works, so really all i can do is turn my phone on and off

how do i get my other buttons to work?
