Study Shows Use of Cell Phones Can Obstruct Traffic
You may be one of those drivers who may be guilty of using their cell phones while on the road. Texting while driving. Taking a call while driving. Who is not guilty of these charges anyway? One time or another, you just need to text or call somebody and the driving wheel cannot stop you in doing so. We are, after all, only human beings.
The University of Utah conducted a study and confirms that people who are using their cell phones while on the road can actually have an adverse effect on the flow of traffic. This is a follow-up on the study and the fact that mobile phone users do cause road accidents.
The study states that motorists who are on their phone while driving tend to drive on a slower pace compared to drivers who do not use their phones on the road. Cell phone addicts tend to complete their road trips longer than the usual. And since highways and public roads can create a certain chain reaction, the flow of traffic can possibly be clogged. Other people on the same road could also be affected adversely due to this habit.
Statistically, in a medium to high-density traffic setting, 19% to 21% of the motorists use their cell phones on the road and these people are less likely to change driving lanes. The average drivers who are not mobile phone users actually change lanes seven to eight times on a 9.2-mile drive. In a similar situation, a cell phone user would typically follow a slow lead vehicle. This actually means that 25 t0 50 seconds are spent at the back of a slow vehicle on a 9.2-mile drive.
Although some people may say that the difference may just be a fracture of an hour to their travel time, but to a lot of people, time is still a precious thing. And just imagine if half of the drivers on the road are cell phone users, a traffic jam can surely be expected.
The use of cell phones does have some social implications. All mobile users, especially those on the road, should always keep phone ethics in mind. Remember to avoid using your cell phones while driving. This does not only cause accidents, but as a respect for others time, let us not cause delays on the road simply because we are more focused on who we are talking to on the phone and not on the road ahead.
