Telus Mobility Family Plan Compared with Rogers Wireless Family Plan
DiscussWireless is always looking for ways to help our users out when it comes to choose rate plans. This is a review of the Family Plans between Rogers Wireless and Telus Mobility (Telus calls it share plans.)
We have phones on both Telus and Rogers networks so we called them to get some more info about both plans. Let's start with the ads, here is the latest ad I got in the mail for Rogers.
Some pretty basic offers that are the same accross the board. But first, we'll post the Telus ad as well (this one straight from their web site.)
Alright, some pros and cons of each, a comparison if you will.
Rogers and Telus are the same in the following areas:
- Free calling between the individuals on the plan.
- You all share minutes with each other.
- 500 minutes of 1st incoming minute free. (That's basically an additional 500 minutes.)
- Free 500 long distance minutes between those on the same plan (not to other numbers, remember that.)
Rogers Wireless Offers the Following That Telus Does not:
Telus offers the following, however, their ads aren't very clear. This offer listed above from their web site is very hard to understand, but after talking to one of their reps this is what I got.
- $45 for two phones per month.
- 275 minutes to share between the plan members.
- Unlimited calling between Telus subscribers.
Here is a list of Comparison between both, Rogers and Telus. These examples are for two phones on the family/couples plan.
- Rogers will cost $50 for 200 anytime minutes,
- Evenings start at 9PM,
- 500 free long distance between plan members,
- Free first minute of incoming calls free (up to 500minutes), unlimited evenings and weekends,
- Free call waiting, call forwarding, conferencing calling?
- Phone and ask to have $35 activation fee removed, however, $35 paid to UPS for shipping
- Additional Fees are such: .50 911 fee + 6.95 system activation fee + 5.00 basic voicemail. =
- Telus apparently will offer monthly plans for $45 for 275 anytime minutes,
- Evenings start at 9PM,
- Unlimited evenings and weekends.
- Free call waiting, call forwarding, conferencing calling
- Unlimited Telus to Telus phone calling? The ad says this, but they never confirmed with me what 'strings' were attached to this.
- Phone and ask to have $35 activation fee removed, however, $35 paid to UPS for shipping...
- Additional Fees are such: 7.95 system access fee + voicemail. I don't know voicemail costs. The phone we have now has free voicemail whereas Rogers charges $5.
Verdict:
Telus offers more minutes at 275 for less money at $45 for two phones. That beats Rogers Wireless at $50 for 200 minutes. But heres' the catch. Telus does not offer the 500 free 1st incoming minute, or the 500 the free long distance minutes. BUT, Telus offers free Telus to Telus calls. Both will waive the activation fee of $35, telus charges a buck more on their system access fee, but Rogers has a .50 911 fee. I didn't discuss phone selection here nor did I consider the add ons (voicemail, etc.)
So really, they don't offer the exact same thing, you'll have to choose :P The Telus offers are really up in the air cause they aren't clear and the offer the rep told me hasn't hit the net yet so.... I'm cancelling the Telus phone just because my Rogers phone has more time before renewal (contract) so that's how I made my decision. Comments?

Thanks for the review, that was very helpful. Do you get charge service fees for each phone? I think you do (that' 6.95 charge.)

hey, i'm a rogers wireless dealer... and i just wanted to point some stuff out...
rogers now has a plan that's $60/month for 2 lines (an additional $30 for another line) that includes:
400 pooled anytime minutes for two phones (add an additional 200 minutes/line), unlimited evenings and weekends (starting at nine but early eve/wknds are available), unlimited incoming calls, and 1000 pooled canadian long distance minutes/month. as with any rogers couples/family plan, there is also unlimited talking between plan members. because this plan's only available on a three year commitment if you are already a rogers customer you can re-committ to the plan and still recieve the promotions. the promotions being: 3 months of unlimited local talk and text as well as a 1 month of free wireless essentials (voicemail, call display, etc). the additional minute rate (if you exceed your monthly pooled minutes) is 35 cents/minute.
also, rogers is famous in canada for it's approach to plan changing. if you find you are unhappy with your plan you are always able to make changes. there is never a penalty for plan changes, at most you'd be asked to resign your contract if the plan you're interested in is only available on a three year committment.

Hi there,
If I get a cell phone number assigned for Pickering/Ajax area, can I call local from Whitby to Toronto?
If we are making long distance calls (1000 minutes, between plan members), will be any deduction from our anytime minutes (400 minutes per couple)? When I call long distance with Fido for example, they charge me long distance/minute + from my minutes assigned with my plan...
If I will use the phone mostly in Whitby, I will have to pay a fee for sub-urban area (Fido is charging $5/month if you are using the phone in the sub-urban area?)?

Cpme on Canada you are very slow compared to the rest of the world. Other countries have been offering unlimited texting for $10/month and completely free incoming calls. Let Vodafone in please
