There are several reports on road accidents due to reckless driving and some of these incidents are related to drivers who are texting, calling or using their cell phones on the road. In some states in America, the use of mobile phones while driving is strictly prohibited by law. Virginia is yet another state that claims that it would soon ban texting while driving.

Driving while texting, or DWT as it is often called, is considered as hazardous and Virginia state legislators are acting to ban this habit. The said law would not only prohibit four wheel drivers to text while on the road, it would also prohibit DWT for people on wheelchairs, motorcycle, bicycle and even those on moped. A road accident in 2007 that killed a total of five HS graduates was suspected to be caused by a driver who is texting while driving. This incident, among hundred others, motivated state legislators to pass a law that would totally ban DWT.

Virginia legislators' attempt to ban cell phones use while driving actually failed. But with DWT, they are hopeful to have a more positive response. As AAA official Lon Anderson stated, "Texting belongs in its own category." Unlike taking a call with a cell phone, a driver's sight can still be on the road while his other hand is on the handset. But with driving while texting, it is a whole new story all together. Driver's loses his eye focus on the road ahead as a driver cannot type and maneuver a wheel all at the same time and that can really be dangerous.

There are a number of studies that show cell phones use while driving can be extremely hazardous. Some of the states that already banned cell phone use on the road include Washington, Utah, New York and California, among others.

The use of cell phone should always be accompanied with phone ethics. Keep in mind that your safety and other people's safety should always comes first. While on the road, focus on your driving, not on your texting.
