YouTube videos on your mobile device
Mobile phone users now have another reason to enhance the features of their mobile devices. With your wireless phone or gadget that is capable of 3G access, they can now view the whole collection of videos from YouTube.
The subsidiary of Google Inc made its website for mobile users even bigger to accommodate the growing number of cell phone users that have 3G mobile phones who frequently access over ten million video clips right on their mobile phone screen. Google Inc. also allows those members of YouTube to have access to their own favorite video clips, including their preferred video channels. Users also have the ability to rate and even leave comments on the videos they have viewed. Some mobile devices also have the capability to record videos. These recorded videos can also be uploaded to YouTube directly, without the hassle of transferring it to the computer to be able to upload it to the website.
Verizon Wireless was the first company to make a deal with YouTube, when YouTube decided to dabble into the world of wireless capabilities. They had exclusive rights and were able to launch a skeletal version of the YouTube website early into 2007, with only the basics features included in the wireless device. They also offered a Java application that they can download to their handheld wireless devices for free. Unfortunately, only a handful of these wireless devices were capable of running Java, both in the countries of United Kingdom and the United States.
The Mobile Product manager of YouTube Dwipal Desai said that since the application by Java contains several interactive components that are also used on the website, the user is able to share from this Java application. They also have incorporated several uploads to the Java application, which allows the user to be have other options other than email or MMS.
The website YouTube has been able to run and exist for a long time because of the revenues they generate for their advertisers. This does not hold true with its mobile site. According to Desai, in order for them to generate revenue, they have to direct traffic towards this mobile site first before they settle on the business model of their site. Furthermore, Desai believes that it is quite safe for the meantime to have no monetization on YouTube’s mobile website but they will see what can be done in the future.
YouTube faces a lot of competition in their field of mobile video, especially those that are generated by the user. This includes Mywaves, 4thMedia, Eyespot, Zannel and Mojungle.
