You've asked, and you've received. Sprint Nextel released its first dual-mode handset for iDEN and CDMA networks—the Motorola ic502, a ruggedized clamshell with external antenna.

The ic502 provides Nextel’s walkie-talkie services running on the carrier’s iDEN network and voice and data services on its CDMA network, supports e-mail and Web browsing, and is GPS-enabled for E911 emergency location services.

Sprint Nextel promised to offer dual-mode CDMA/iDEN phones by the end of the year. We will let you know when we have some of the phones for you to compare (price wise).

The Motorola ic502 uses iDEN for walkie-talkie functionality, and relies on CDMA for voice, messaging, and data services. Resistant to dust, shock, and vibration, the Motorola ic502 includes a 65k color display and speakerphone functionality. Java applications can be used with the ic502, though apart from a set of location-based services to make use of the built in GPS, there is not much else to say about this basic handset.
