palmOne has released a ROM software update for the Tungsten T5. The update is being issued even before general retail availability and contains some performance enhancements and fixes some known issues.

According to the Tungsten T5 Update palmOne support listing, the T5 Update features performance and reliability enhancements for your handheld. It addresses these issues:
  • Fixes a problem in the Calendar that can cause a crash when the default view is changed from Agenda to Month View.
  • Fixes an issue in Contacts when using the Menu drop down list for new entries.
  • Adjusts the Palm OS soft keyboard to prevent system instability in certain situations.

Before going through with the update, you should first check if it is necessary by checking the ROM date. To check create a new Memo, enter the graffit shortcut symbol, then a period, then the number 9. This shortcut will display the system ROM date. If yours is Sat 10/16/2004 2:45p or after, you don't need the Tungsten T5 Update. If it is then proceed to follow the PC or Mac installation directions on palmOne support. http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/tungstent5/tungstent5update.html

The procedure requires a fully charged T5, the latest Palm Desktop software, at least 16.7MB of free RAM and a Mac or PC. The process will erease the entire contents of memory, so you must take steps to backup your RAM and Flash drive before going forward.
