Linux as a platform for 3G devices received another boost with Qualcomm's announcement that its 3G chipsets will support the operating system. Specifically, the company said it will support Linux on its Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipsets used in 3G phones. The support is already available on older chipsets and the company said it will support Linux in future chipsets that support future generations of 3G such as HSDPA and 1xEV-DO Revision A, which are expected to be rolled out by wireless carriers in 2006.
PalmSource has said that it will port the Palm OS to Linux for use in
smartphones and several other vendors, such as MontaVista Software, are
releasing Linux platforms around which phone vendors can build devices.
