Softeq Development announced plans to ship a new rugged handheld called the DURATEQ 3100 in September. Unlike other such devices, this one is built on HP's iPAQ Pocket PC series. DURATEQ is not a ruggedized off-the-shelf iPAQ, however. Rather, Softeq says it engineered the device with the latest iPAQ electronics inside instead of simply covering an existing iPAQ model with plastic and other toughening materials. As with handhelds from the likes of Intermec and Symbol, DURATEQ is shock, dust, and waterproof. At 4.75 x 3.0 x 0.75 inches and 5.2 ounces, Softeq asserts the Pocket PC doesn’t have the same bulk, weight, and awkwardness of those other companies’ devices. DURATEQ runs on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition platform and, as with all other Pocket PCs, it bundles mobile versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and Internet Explorer. When purchasing, user will have the options of selecting either a 300 MHz or 400 MHz Samsung S3C 2440 processor and 56 MB or 152 MB of RAM. There’s the choice of a 1440 mAh removable/rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery or a high capacity 2880 mAH model as well. DURATEQ's 65,536 color display measures 3.5 inches and supports portrait or landscape viewing. We expect the device’s screen runs at the Pocket PC standard 240 x 320 pixel resolution. Audio features include an integrated microphone, speaker, and a 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack. There’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless and a 6-pin docking connector for charging. Secured Secure Digital and CompactFlash card slots—for peripheral and memory expansion—are designed to prevent tampering.
Accessories include a magnetic stripe reader, bar code scanner, FM
radio, receipt printer and GPS module. An optional multi-unit charger
supports up to five handheld units at once. Softeq said it would target
retail and commercial environments such as guest services, restaurant
POS, hospitality, field operations and maintenance applications for the
DURATEQ Pocket PC.
