Toshiba has released a Pocket PC known as the e805. Some of the latest visual technology is packed into this Pocket PC, boasting a 480x640 high resolution display setting. Particular specification include:

  • CPU: Intel PXA263 @ 400 Mhz

  • RAM: 128MB SDRAM

  • Program Memory: 32MC CMOS flash ROM, 32MB NAND Memory

  • Application Memory: 32MB

  • Screen: 4" TFT Transreflective Display (65 thousand colors with 10 step brightness control)

  • Video Card: ATI 2MB Internal memory (Supporting QVGA and VGA resolutions)

  • Audio: AC-97 Codec Chip; WM9712L Sound chip (16 bit stereo output)

  • Wireless: Integrated WiFi

  • Dimensions: 135.0mm x 77.0mm x 16.7mm

  • Mass: 198g

The Toshiba e805 is complete with an ATI video card with an independent 2MB of RAM for your video and gaming pleasure. Another notable feature is the generous 128MB of ram. As noted before, the display is impressive. The huge 4" VGA capable display shows images in ultra high, full blown VGA mode.

Other Features:

  • Built-in Speaker

  • Built-in quality microphone

  • Built in WiFi (802.11b)

  • Built in Compact flash card slot

  • Built-in Secure Digital card slot

  • Software: Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Pocket Internet Explorer, Microsoft Reader for PPC, Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 for PPC, File Explorer, MSN Messenger, Microsoft Transcriber, Microsoft Activesync, Microsoft Outlook, Toshiba Voice Recorder, Toshiba Text to Speech

The software package is similar to other packages found on most high end PPC's. However, Toshiba did incorporate customized voice recorder software and Toshiba text to speech software.

Size wise, the Toshiba is considerably larger than the T3 when closed - however, when the T3 is opened its length extends just shy of the e805. The T3 is narrower than the e805, however, Toshiba was limited in the width of this handheld as they decided to use a 4" screen. The T3 is considerably lighter than the e805; ringing in at 156g which is shy of the e805's 198g.

Wireless features include:

WiFi
The Toshiba e805 boasts built-in WiFi. THose who have tested the WiFi feature are pleased with its overall function.

Battery Life
After running the SPB battery test bench mark in the most common 'maximum backlight, standard using' mode this e805 managed an astounding 4 hours 24 minutes and 29 seconds. This test doesn't simply keep your handheld on for as long as the battery last it is constantly opening and closing a word document to simulate real usage. Almost four and a half hours of continuous use on maximum brightness is more than enough for me.

Overall this is one very solid handheld device. From raw power to graphic performance the Toshiba e805 dominates the field. As tested by SPB benchmark it got the highest all around performance mark - and rightfully so. Packed with the right set of features and a relatively small, sleek, streamlined design, the Toshiba e805 is arguably the best Pocket PC released to date. A definite recommendation for anyone who wants a power house in their pocket and can afford it. Business professional who desire the high resolution display may flock to the e805.

Pros

  • Huge, spectacular 4" Display

  • Built in WiFi

  • Excellent Microphone

  • Great Battery performance

  • Sleek and Streamlined design

  • Great software package

  • High Resolution mode

Cons

  • Expensive

  • High resolution mode is handicapped

  • Display is not too terrific in standard resolution

  • Larger then other smaller screened handhelds

  • Missing camera capabilities
