Palm is starting to offer push e-mail service similar to the BlackBerry service. Palm announced an upgrade to its VersaMail service for Palm Treo 680 and 700 smartphones that will include Microsoft Corp.’s Direct Push technology. The software automatically updates e-mail, calendar and contact information, “waking” the device to deliver each new message.

The upgrade is a free download for VersaMail users. Palm OS-based Treos had previously been limited to Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, which synchs mobile devices with computers.

I am considering purchasing a Verizon Treo 700p. I wondered if you had received any feedback on the push e-mail and whether it was reliable and comparable to a blackberry? Thanks.

I haven't specifically, but part of it would probably rely on receiving and sending system, not just the device itself.
