NTT DoCoMo has taken two devices off store shelves after reports that they no longer work in Japan after having roamed internationally. While global roaming does not sound like such a big step in this world of quadband GSM handsets, it is something that has plagued traveling DoCoMo customers. Since Japan has been on 3G networks for so long, most handsets bought will simply not function in other countries. The NTT DoCoMo Simpure line was launched to remedy this situation.
After selling 130,000 units of two Simpure handsets, the Simpure L by LG and Simpure N by NEC, since launching in April, there have been 115 cases reported of the handsets ceasing to function after returning to Japan after usage in countries such as the US, England, and France.
NTT DoCoMo has said it is looking into the cause of the malfunction, which can be remedied by re-flashing the phone's firmware, but will halt sale of the effected handsets until at least the end of July.
