|
|
Antivirus researchers are issuing advisories about a mobile phone virus that spreads through Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and Bluetooth. Dubbed "CommWarrior," the virus targets the version of the Symbian operating system running on Nokia Series 60 handsets. Security firm F-Secure has noted that the virus is similar to e-mail worms like MyDoom and Sobig, and has the potential to spread rapidly. CommWarrior can spread through multimedia messages that include an image, audio or video. The virus sports more than 20 different messages to try and lure users into opening the attached file, including a message that seems to be a legitimate software update from Symbian. Other tactics include a birthday message, a promise of an Internet accelerator and pornography. Once it infects a phone, CommWarrior will start searching other phones reachable over Bluetooth to send infected files. F-Secure believes CommWarrior originated in Russia because there is Russian-language text hidden inside one of the files that translates, roughly, to "No to braindeads." Security researchers have been watching cell phones carefully for months, especially since late December, when the source code for two Cabir variants was put online. In addition to more focus on Cabir, the release of the code might have prompted other interest in targeting cell phones in a more general sense. So far, CommWarrior has not been reported on a large number of devices.
