Symbian reported revenue of $76.3 million in the third quarter, a 44-percent increase from the year-ago quarter. Shipments of handsets running the Symbian OS hit 13 million in the quarter, up from 8.5 million in the year-ago quarter.
The 3rd quarter also marked the 100 millionth shipment of Symbian smartphones since June 1998. More than two-thirds of that 100 million shipped within the past 21 months, he said.
Historically, Symbian has developed and spun-off three user interface technologies, Panagrossi said. The OS maker’s “Crystal” UI became Nokia Corp.’s Series 80, its “Pearl” UI became Nokia’s Series 60 and its “Quartz” UI, which morphed into UIQ Technologies, will now transfer to Sony Ericsson’s ownership by the end of the year.
Symbian is a joint venture owned by Nokia Corp. (48 percent), L.M. Ericsson (16 percent), Sony Ericsson (13 percent), Panasonic Mobile Communications (11 percent), Siemens AG (8 percent) and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (4 percent).
