Ok not a scam per se, but seriously folks, why do all (not just Rogers) service providers try to scam their patrons? I'm glad that Virign is around to knock off bogus charges (no activiation fee) but really what's with the fees.
My situation:
Old school plan from 2001 - 50 any time minutes, unlimited evening and weekend starting @ 6PM for $25 bucks a month.
Nothing at Rogers right now beats this plan, even though it sucks.
So I want to do the couples plan. IF I sign on, and since I'm a NOT a new customer I pay the following:
100 bucks for additional phone 35 bucks activiation fee my plan must change to something worse than I have (WAY WORSE). We're talking 100 minutes between the two phones, unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 9PM.
A number of people are in bed by 9! So to change over I need to pay an additional 135 bucks and loose 3 hors on my evenings. Does that really save me money? I think once number portability comes in for Canada this corporate pigs won't get away with gouging consumers like this.
System access feed 7 bucks a month, 911 fees, AND activation fee? Unreal.

I wouldn't call it scammy since they all (they being big cell companies) do it. Basically for family/couples plans you WILL NOT save money if you DO NOT already go over with your minutes BETWEEN family. That's the only way you save, if you never go over your minutes than it's only a convenience of having one bill. In actuality if you don't go over with minutes it costs you MORE to go on a family plan cause you need to activate phones, etc. and that costs money. Here is an image of their latest offer, it's great if you do lots of interfamily calling and they also give you what appears to be 500 long distance minutes on top of your 100. [hr] But note the fine print where all the costs are (nothing really any different than other clel phone companies less virgin who don't even offer family plans).

If you don't have a contract, go to a Telus Corporate store before end of October (Ontario/Quebec, maybe other provinces, check out). Right now they have a promotional plan, which is NOT on their website. You'll still pay activation fee 35$ + 6.95 network chage + .75$ 911 charge But : You will get for 25$ (on 2 to 3 year contract only) 200 min + 50 min bonus week ends + evenings unlimited from 6pm to 7am Voicemail 3, caller ID, cal forwarding, call waiting and 3 way calling. Most of my friends got this plan this autumn. Pretty good deal, compared to all other plans.

I'm going to put a blog post up comparing Telus and Rogers family plans in a bit here. For now, I spoke to Rogers Wireless and noted a few things. Rogers online (internet) Rogers stores Rogers phone center All three are INDEPENDENT. Their systems are not meshed meaning if you see a deal online with Rogers the people on the phone won't give it to your.... Work out any combo you want. YOu talk to someone and get some deals then you need to go through the phone process to get a new phone. Regarding this family plan here are some items to clarify that the ad doesn't show.
- The 500 minutes long distance is only for those on the plan, not for phone calls to others. (Telus was right about this one.)
- They will waive the $35 activation fee if you phone in, however, the catch is you'll pay the UPS shipping which is 30 bucks.
- You can get one month free at least on service so just ask (over th ephone).
