CDMA continues to gain subscribers with its increased provider usage (more providers are using CDMA and of these providers more people are getting phones). The CDMA Development Group (CDG) reported that 29 million new CDMA subscribers ? 15 million for cdma2000 subscribers and 14 million for existing CDMA networks ? were added in the third quarter of 2004, bringing the worldwide CDMA subscriber total to 227 million. According to CDG, Asia-Pacific remains the largest and fastest-growing region for CDMA with 96 million users, or 42 percent of total CDMA subscribers. Korea is the largest Asian player with 36 million subscribers. China ranks second with 25 million subscribers and Japan ranks third with 18 million subscribers. Outside of Asia, North America continued to show good subscriber growth. In the quarter, CDG said North American CDMA operators added nearly 17 million subscribers, increasing the overall subscriber base to 88 million. Latin America and the Caribbean also had a strong quarter. Subscriber totals in these regions reached 39 million, which represents a 28 percent increase from the previous year.
