Motorola has plans to develop handsets for Sprint Nextel that will work on both the walkie-talkie network that Motorola created for Nextel in the 1990s as well as Sprint’s CDMA network technology.
Motorola expects the first dual-mode iDEN/CDMA phone to go to market by fall, with the second available by yearend 2006.
The move signals that Sprint, which bought Nextel last year, will
likely remain a large customer after its supply agreement with Motorola
expires in 2007. Sprint Nextel’s walkie-talkie phones accounted for 13
percent of the handsets Motorola sold last year.
