Sprint PCS launched a location-based service that provides driving directions through wireless voice calls, as one of its first planned LBS offerings. Infonxx said it will provide the directory-assistance services for Sprint PCS' new 411 location-based service. The new service will enable most Sprint customers to receive driving directions through wireless voice calls when the callers provide permission to locate. Sprint said the capability marks the initial deployment of its LBS portfolio, which can identify a customer's location-with his permission-from a voice call and use the information to deliver a range of information even the customer isn't sure of his exact locations. Sprint deployed a handset-based enhanced 911 solution based on global positioning system technology to meet the Federal Communications Commission's E911 mandate.
Sprint said it intends to provide additional LBS services in the
future, including populated maps; turn-by-turn directions; points of
interest such as nearby ATMs, gas stations and restaurants; and weather
applications to supply current information and forecasts even when
users are uncertain of local ZIP codes.
