Not to be out down by Cingular's recent high-speed upgrade announcement, Sprint announced it will fast-track plans to add EV-DO high-speed data technology to its CDMA network. Upgrades will begin immediately, with service available in American States by the end of the year, and remaining major areas to follow in 2005. EV-DO offers average data rates of 300-500 Kbps, whcih is up to 10 times faster than Sprint's current network. Sprint had orginally planned to skip EV-DO in favor of EV-DV technology. However, competitive presure from Verizon Wireless and Cingular, coupled with the delayed availability of EV-DV equipment, forced Sprint to re-evaluate their plans.
