Virgin Mobile warned Canadians against signing a mobile phone contract before they have the freedom of owning their own number. The company is demanding that Canada's incumbent wireless service providers assure Canadians they will be informed of all the facts before they make a decision about whether to sign a long-term mobile phone contract. The CRTC issued a decision requiring Canada's mobile industry to implement number portability in most of Canada by March 14, 2007, six months sooner than the timeline contemplated by The Canadian Wireless Technology Association's plan released earlier this fall. When the CWTA's plan was released saying number portability would be implemented in September 2007, Virgin Mobile called it "too slow" and asked for the government and the CRTC to significantly accelerate the timelines.
Recent surveys have revealed that 30% of Canadians would switch providers if they could and a variety of reports as far back as 1998 have revealed more than 70% of Canadians said keeping their mobile number was important to them.
